Aloitin joskus kauan, kauan sitten tämän kirjan, mutta en tainut päästä ensimmäistä lukua pidemmälle. Nyt sain koko kirjan luettua. Luin tämän Kirjallisuuden genret -kurssia varten. Minun piti tehdä toinen blogipostaus kirjasta. Teinkin, mutta se käsitti vain kirjan ensimmäisen osan.

Tämä oli aivan ihana kirja! Ensimmäinen oikea klassikko johon todella rakastuin!

Olen ihmeissäni miten tutulta kirjan tarina vaikuttaa. En oikein tiedä miksi. Olen saattanut nähdä kirjasta tehdyn elokuvan, mutta en ole varma. Minulla ei ole minkäänlaista muistikuvaa siitä, paitsi hyvin hämäriä, enkä voi olla varma jos sekoitankin jotkin muistoni Kaukametsän pakolaisiin. Tämä tv-sarja oli mielestäni aika samanlainen kuin Ruohometsän kansa. Varmistuakseni muistoistani pitäisikin katsoa elokuva ja vielä kaupan päälle Kaukametsän pakolaisetkin. Sen verran tosin olen saanut nyt tietää elokuvasta, että siinä oli punasilmäisiä, mustia kannibaali kaniineja. Näitä ei tosin ainakaan tässä ensimmäisessä kirjassa ollut. Tiedä sitten onko toisessa vai onko nämä vain elokuvantekijöiden keksimää.

Aluksi ihmettelin miksi kirja on fantasiassa, mutta kyllähän tämä sinne kuuluu. En oikein osaa sijoittaa sitä mihinkään muuhunkaan. Kirjassa tutustutaan kaniinien maailmaan, tapoihin ja kieleenkin. Uskoisin, että biologisesti kirja saattaa olla oikein. En tosin tiedä kaniineista tarpeeksi varmistuakseni asiasta, mutta ainakin maailma vaikuttaa uskottavalta. Sinänsä kirjassa ei olla missään keksityssä maailmassa, vaan meille tuttua maailmaa vain katsotaan kaniinien silmin. Kaniinit ovatkin joissain asioissa hyvinkin ihmismäisiä, niillä on esim. hyvin tarkka hierarkia. Kaniinien elämä vaikuttaa julmalta. Kirjassa on jonkin verran väkivaltaa ja tappamista. Uhkana ovat enemmänkin kaniinit itse, mutta myös elilit eli kaniinien viholliset. Kirjasta löytyy myös raakaa verta tihkuvaa kuvausta ja pelottavia hetkiä.

Juuri tuo väkivaltaisuus ja ronski kieli pistää miettimään, kelle tämä kirja on kirjoitettu. Äkkiseltään voisi kuvitella tätä lastenromaaniksi ja mielestäni tätä voisi kyllä lapsille lukeakin, ei tosin ihan perheen pienimmille, eikä mieluusti kovin nuorille yksin luettavaksi. Nuorille tämä saattaisi myös sopia, varsinkin eläimistä pitäville nuorille. Fantasiaa lukeville aikuisille tai eläinromaaneista pitäville tämä kirja on varmasti tuttu, mutta en tiedä löytääkö moni muu kirjaa käteensä. Tietysti klassikon maine auttaa, mutta en usko, että kirja olisi kovin luettu ellei se olisi juurikin klassikko. Mikä olisi harmi, koska se on upea kirja!

Pidin kirjasta valtavasti! Odotankin innolla kakkoskirjan, Ruohometsän tarinoita, lukemista. Tämän kirjan sain onneksi nautiskella loppuun hitaasti ja hartaasti kuten olisin halunnut tehdä jo monelle muullekin kirjalle kurssien aikana, mutta siihen ei ollut mahdollisuutta tiukan aikataulun takia.

I started this book a long, long time ago, but I think that I didn't read more than the first chapter. Now I finally read the whole book. I read this for my Literature genres course. I had to make a blog post about the book. I did, but only about the first part of the book.

This was such a lovely book! This was the first real classic I really loved!

I was surprised that the story seemed so familiar. I don't know why. I might have seen the movie which is based on the book, but I'm not sure. I have no memory of the movie except some very dim memories, but I'm not sure if I confuse them with a TV series called The Animals of Farthing Wood. I think that this TV series was quite the same as the Watership Down. To be sure about this I'll need to see the movie and also the series. I did find out that in the movie there's red eyed, black, cannibal rabbits. In the book there's no such things, at least not in this first book. I'm not sure if they are in the second book or are they just movie makers invention.

First I wondered why this book is in fantasy genre but after reading it awhile I found that it definitely belonged there. At least I can't place it anywhere else. In the book you'll get to know the world, habits and language of the rabbits. I believe that the book is quite biological accurate. Although, I don't know enough about rabbits to be sure, but the world seems believable. In itself it's not a new world in the book, it's the world we know, but only seen with rabbit's point of view. In some manners rabbits are quite the same as we humans are, for example they have a very strict hierarchy. The life of a rabbit seems very brutal. So there is some violence and killing in the book. Threat is everywhere caused mainly by the rabbits themselves but also by the enemies of the rabbits, elil. There's also very cruel events with blood and scary moments in the book.

Maybe because of the violence and racy language, it makes you think, who is this books audience. First you would think that this is children novel and I think that you could read this for children but not for very young and definitely you should not let a young child read this without an adult. This would be good book for youth, especially if they like animals. For adults who read fantasy or who like animal novels I think this book is already familiar, but I'm not sure if others would find it. Of course it helps that this is a classic, but I don't think it would be as much read if it weren't. And that would be a shame because it's a wonderful book!

I liked this very much! I'm eagerly waiting to read the second book, Tales from Watership Down. Luckily I got to finish this book with time and pleasure just like I would have liked to finish many other books too during the courses, but that just wasn't possible because of the tight timetable I had.
