Kuvaus takakannesta:

Jostain merkillisestä syystä he eivät pääse Tylypahkan pikajunan kyytiin. Kun he lopulta saapuvat kouluun, on vastaanotto kirjaimellisesti murskaava.

Description from Goodreads

The Dursleys were so mean and hideous that summer that all Harry Potter wanted was to get back to the Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. But just as he's packing his bags, Harry receives a warning from a strange, impish creature named Dobby who says that if Harry Potter returns to Hogwarts, disaster will strike.

And strike it does. For in Harry's second year at Hogwarts, fresh torments and horrors arise, including an outrageously stuck-up new professor, Gilderoy Lockhart, a spirit named Moaning Myrtle who haunts the girls' bathroom, and the unwanted attentions of Ron Weasley's younger sister, Ginny. But each of these seem minor annoyances when the real trouble begins, and someone, or something, starts turning Hogwarts students to stone. Could it be Draco Malfoy, a more poisonous rival than ever? Could it possibly be Hagrid, whose mysterious past is finally told? Or coud it be the one everyone at Hogwarts most suspects: Harry Potter himself?

The second Harry Potter book was as nice read as the first one, but even though it was very interesting it didn't reach to the same level as the first one. I can't quite explain why. And it seemed that all in our reading circle had some difficulties to say anything about the book. So we thought that the book was some kind of transitional book, although it still was a very important book as any other books in the series.

There were a lot of background information and a lot of clues about the characters, about past and future. The book is total action from the beginning and it felt that in every chapter there was happening something, although we got to the chamber of secrets part not until than almost in the middle of the book and the last three chapters were full in the subject of chamber of secrets.

I was also surprised on how late we got to introduced into Aragog. I remembered it would have been much earlier.

I had also forgotten how annoying Gilderoy was. Oh, how I hated him. I had the movie more fresh on my mind even though I had listened the audio book read by Stephen Fry about a year ago and I had seen the movie a long time ago. In the movie, Gilderoy wasn't that annoying than in the book.

I've read and listened this book quite the same amount as the first one. I've also seen the movie couple of times. And I watched the movie right after reading the book. This time the differences weren't so obvious, although I did saw some faults and I was so annoyed on how Hermione got to know what was in the Chamber of Secrets. It just happened. But I agree with my friend that, in the movie, the end scenes were much interesting and amazing than in the book. But of course, it's easier to make tension with visual pictures than just read about them and in the movie the ending lasted longer than in the book.

Anyway, I've never really liked this second book and movie. I don't know why. Although, it's still good. I'm waiting to start reading the third one because many have said it's their favourite book and I remember I liked it too.

Rakastetun kirjan uusittu laitos. Kirjallisuuden ilosanomaa!

Kirjavinkkarikirja opastaa kirjavinkkauksen pariin havainnollistavin, elävin esimerkein. Mukana on myös kirjalistoja vinkkauksessa käytettäväksi.

Marja-Leena Mäkelä on kirjailija, kirjastonhoitaja ja kirjavinkkauksen uranuurtaja.

Oppari -kirja jälleen.

Tämä oli ihan mielenkiintoinen kirja. Sinänsä ei kauheasti kirjavinkkauksesta kertonut mitään uutta, jota en olisi jo tiennyt, mutta muutamat kokemukset olivat mielenkiintoista lukea ja olihan kirjassa hyviä vinkkejä. Minua kiinnostaa varsinkin kirjan lopussa olevat kirjalistat.

Marja-Leena Mäkelä is an author, librarian and the pioneer of book talk.

A thesis book again.

This was interesting book. There wasn't really anything new about book talk which I wouldn't have already known. but there were some interesting experiences and some good tips for book talk. I was especially interested of the book lists at the end of the book. I like lists :D

It was an OK book, but I would have though about the headings more, or should I say, the whole structuring of the book. Now it felt that, it just jumped from subject to subject and the headings were just following each other without any certain themes. With a bigger heading segmentation or with themes etc. the book would have been more readable.

Rowling, J.K.
Harry Potter ja viisasten kivi
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (1998)
Tammi, 2001
s. 335

Kuvaus takakannesta:

Harry potter on mielestään ihan tavallinen poika. Silti kaikki on aloitettava alusta.

Skotlantilainen J.K.

Olen lukenut kirjan suomeksi ainakin kaksi kertaa, englanniksi ainakin kerran ja äänikirjaa olen kuunnellut englanniksi Stephen Fryn lukemana ainakin kaksi kertaa. Ja yhä tekee mieli palata kirjaan uudestaan ja uudestaan. Ennen tätä lukukertaa olin kuunnellut kirjan iltasaduksi itselleni äänikirjana.

Olin oikeastaan unohtanut miten hyvää kieltä kirjassa on. Suomentaja on onnistunut täydellisesti! Kyse on kuitenkin lastenkirjasta.

Toki ensimmäinen kirja on aina esittelykirja.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (1997)

Description from Goodreads.com:

Harry Potter's life is miserable. His parents are dead and he's stuck with his heartless relatives, who force him to live in a tiny closet under the stairs. But his fortune changes when he receives a letter that tells him the truth about himself: he's a wizard. A mysterious visitor rescues him from his relatives and takes him to his new home. Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

After a lifetime of bottling up his magical powers, Harry finally feels like a normal kid. But even within the wizarding community, he is special. He is the boy who lived: the only person to have ever survived a killing curse inflicted by the evil Lord Voldemort, who launched a brutal takeover of the wizarding world, only to vanish after failing to kill Harry.

Though Harry's first year at Hogwarts is the best of his life, not everything is perfect. There is a dangerous secret object hidden within the castle walls, and Harry believes it's his responsibility to prevent it from falling into evil hands. But doing so will bring him into contact with forces more terrifying than he ever could have imagined.

Full of sympathetic characters, wildly imaginative situations, and countless exciting details, the first installment in the series assembles an unforgettable magical world and sets the stage for many high-stakes adventures to come.

I can't really remember how many times I've read The Philosopher's Stone already. This was at least the sixth time, that is my guess. I count also the times which I've listened the book as an audio book. I've read the book at least twice in Finnish, at least once in English and I've listened the audio book, read by Stephen Fry, at least twice. And still I want to come back to the book again and again. Before this reading time, I had listened the audio book as for my bedtime story.

Actually, I had forgotten how well the book was written. That was my first notice of the book when I started to read it. Right away it washed me away from the first page and it was a real pleasure to read, and easy. Maybe that's why I got so excited about the book at the first place, when I wasn't that big of a reader yet and my attention span was half of what it is now. The translator has made a wonderful job! Although, some of the translated names irks me but I do understand why some of the names have been translated and some not. After all, it's a children's book. And if the translations starts to irk me too much, I can always read the books in English. While reading the book I also noticed that I really wanted to read it aloud. The text is like tailor-made into reading aloud. And I did really like it when I listened the audio book read by Stephen Fry, so I assume that the text is working in English too.

My recollections of the book were based on the movie, although I had just listened the audio book. But because I listened it as a bedtime story it happened a lot that I fell asleep before the chapters ended. So, I didn't really register half of the story :D It was really nice to read the book even though I knew what was going to happen, but I didn't really remember the details. Still, I missed a little bit the feeling that I would have gotten if I wouldn't have read the book earlier or watched the movie. But on the other hand, it was really interesting to read it now when I already knew what's going to happen in the future. I paid more attention now in those small clues and things that I had thought earlier to be unimportant or even pointless.

And there's a plenty of clues! Even from the first book, and at the moment, it's real fun to try to spot them! I'm reading and interpreting the book so differently than when it was fresh. Maybe that's one of its secrets why everyone are reading Potters again and again. They are multidimensional, well written and it feels like everything has been thought out a long before even starting to write the first book. I haven't noticed it before, but now when I'm reading the first book again and at the same time I already know what's going to happen in the next ones, it's wonderful feeling when you get an epiphany that you didn't notice before!

Of course, the first book is also an introduction book. You have to introduce the readers into the world and characters, but still you can't forget the action. Actually, the main happenings are going on at the end of the book, two last chapters are pure action. Before that there's foundations made, you get to know the world and characters and get clues. Not until almost in the middle of book we'll get to the school. But it didn't bother me. The book was still very interesting, although it wasn't a full action all the time. But still there's happening a lot all along.

Although there is more male characters than female in the book, those female characters are amazing. There's no single weak woman in the book. And I know there isn't going to be any. Actually, the males aren't weak either. For everyone there's a good and bad side. Maybe the characters are even too aggravated but that just gives them space to grow.

We thought about why Potters are still so popular. We decided that because of they, or at least the first book, are so well written and because the world is so well created that it fascinates people. And even though there's no cellphones, laptops, tablets etc. in it, the books are still timeless and the second generation is already reading the Potters fluently. Witches and wizards don't need the technology of muggles. We believe that the popularity is going to last for the third generation and maybe even fourth.

I had decided a long time ago that, when I read Potters again I would watch the movies right after reading the books, and so I did. It was a shock to watch the first movie after reading the first book. I had never noticed how much there was differences. Actually, those changes started really bother me, especially Neville's role in the movie which was too small and how Neville was replaced with Ron at the forbidden forest. In my opinion, it was a big mistake. Neville would have deserved his screen time. I hadn't notice these things before, but earlier I had a much more time between reading the book and watching the movie. But now I truly understand those Potter fans who got angry of the movie makers when the movie was released.

The movies are a good addition to the books, but I really hope that people would read the books first before they watch the movies. There's so much things missing from the movies and they are making such a big shortcuts.

Harry Potter -lukupiiri / Harry Potter reading circle

English below

Itseasiassa viime jouluna hieman petyin.

Tällä hetkellä en tosin tiedä pitäisikö minun hankkea englanninkieliset Potterit pokkareina vai ostaisinko jopa kuvitetut laitokset englanniksi, joita nyt on ilmestynyt kaksi ensimmäistä kirjaa. Joka tapauksessa haluaisin hankkia kuvitetut kirjat. Ne ovat upeita! Vaikkakin tilaavieviä. Toisaalta taas, haluaisin ostaa kuvakirjat myös ehkä suomeksi koska niitä olisi sitten loistavaa lukea mahdolliselle omalle lapselle. Vaikeaa.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

We started Harry Potter reading circle with friends. One of us hadn't read all the Potters yet and others were always saying that they should read them again someday. So we started the reading circle! We have already read The philosopher's Stone and The Chamber of Secrets but I will tell about them in their own posts.

At the moment, we are using Facebook messenger's video call because I'm the only one who doesn't live at Seinäjoki anymore. Our first reading circle session was a success and it lasted about one and a half hour! It was very nice!

Let me tell you how I got introduced into Potter.

It almost happened that I didn't read a single Potter, at least not before the first movie came out. Although, I'm not sure if I would have read the books after the movies either.

I didn't want to read Potters because of the very ugly covers of the Finnish editions. Well, now those covers aren't anymore that ugly, because I have used to watch them many years, but back in the beginning of 2000 they were truly ugly, in my opinion. I wasn't a much of a reader back then either, I read mostly comics (and captions) so it wasn't tempting for me to read thick book with an ugly cover.

But I was forced. My friend forced me to read the first book when I was at secondary school at the beginning of 2000, after she got herself hooked. Thanks to my friend! What would have I lost if I wouldn't have read that book. It really washed me away. At that time, it was very rare for me that I would have read thick book in a whole, voluntarily, and even continued reading. All the 7 books. It's also the only book series which I've truly waited. I remember that I read the first three or four books in a row, but then, I started to wait for others to be published and translated. Potters were also my first book series which I started to collect. Every Christmas I got a new book whenever they were published.

Actually, I got a little bit disappointed last Christmas. I thought that it would have been truism that I was waiting Potter as a Christmas present. I was waiting for surprise. But it never came. I didn't want to really ask for the Cursed Child because I wanted to have the surprise moment and I imagined that I would get it anyway. But apparently others were thinking that I would already have it. Well, maybe I should buy it myself then, or then, I should wait for the next Christmas. Maybe I'll wait for the Christmas, I believe we will read the other Potters before that :)

I've also considered of getting the Potters in English too. That big of a fan I am. But at the moment, I'm not really sure if I should buy them as a paperbacks or should I even invest into those illustrated editions, there's two of them at the moment. After all, I would really like to have those illustrated editions. They are great! Although bulky. But on the other hand, it would also be great to have them in Finnish, because then it would be nicer to read them for possible own child. It's hard. I need to think this more. After all, I'm not on a hurry, there's only two of the books illustrated yet, Philosopher's Stone and Chamber of Secrets. And the prices might come downward yet.
