Laskiainen

Naisten juhla. Naisten oli kiellettyä tehdä töitä laskiaisena. Laskiaisena varmistettiin onni monissa naisten toimialaan kuuluvissa asioissa. Pellavan, hampun ja villan kasvu sekä naisten kasvattamien pihapiirin hyötykasvien kuten nauriin, herneen ja pavun suotuisa kasvu varmistettiin taioilla. Laskiaisena keitettiin herneistä tai pavuista rokkaa, laskettiin mäkeä, saunottiin ja syötiin uhriateria vainajahenkien kanssa. Rasvainen ruoka toi onnea ja menestystä.

Laskiainen oli ennen kaikkea naisten työ- ja toimialaan kuuluva päivä. Useimmat laskiaisen tavat ja uskomukset kohdistuivat joko naisten käsitöiden raaka-aineisiin: pellavaan, hamppuun ja villaan, tai karjanhoitoon ja naisten kasvattamiin pihan piirin hyötykasveihin, nauriiseen, herneeseen ja papuun. Joulunaika oli miesten, peltoviljan ja hevosten juhla, mutta laskiainen oli taas naisten aikaa. Saman ilmiön voi havaita Virossa, jossa naisten oli kiellettyä tehdä töitä laskiaisen aikoihin. Toisaalta kaikenlainen veistäminen ja hakkaaminen oli myös kiellettyä laskiaisena.

Suomessa kehruut oli saatava päätökseen mieluummin laskiaiseen mennessä, sillä päivän pidentyessä alkoi kankaiden kutominen, joka vaati enemmän valoa. Joka tapauksessa laskiaisena kehrääminen olisi tuonut perheelle epäonnea tulevaisuudessa. Kotiaskareet lopetettiin varhain iltapäivällä, jotta työt olisivat joutuneet hyvin koko vuoden. Mitä varhaisemmin lehmät juotettiin ja ruokittiin, sitä varhaisemmin ne tulivat kesällä metsästä kotiin eivätkä yöstäneet. Saunaan mentiin päivännäöllä, miehet ja naiset kilvan. Jos miehet ehtivät ensin, tuli sonninvasikoita, jos naiset, niin saatiin lehmäisiä. Saunassa ei puheltu, jotta kesä olisi saatu olla rauhassa hyönteisiltä. Kiusoitellen saunassa koeteltiin toisten lujuutta puhumattomuudessa monin tavoin, kuten kaatamalla kylmää vettä selkään. Erityisesti pojat tekivät mielellään tällaisia koiruuksia tytöille.

Vaikuttaa siltä, että laskiaissaunan äänettömyys on jäänne ihmisten luona vierailevien vainajasielujen muistamisesta. Laskiaisena ruokailunkin aikana noudatettiin nimittäin äänettömyyttä, joka muistuttaa sitä hiljaisuutta, jota on noudatettu kaikissa vainajajuhlien uhriaterioissa. Karstulassa ripoteltiin ennen illallista pyödälle jauhoja ja suolaa, joihin piirrettiin useita viisikulmia. Sitten käytiin pöytään äänettömänä illallista syömään. Hiljaisuutta koetettiin laskiaisena tavoitella myös aikaisemmalla kylpemisellä ja levolle asettumisella jo päivännäön aikaan, jotta mikään melu ei häiritsisi henkien rauhaa. Ulvilassa mentiin varhain laskiaisehtoona kattojen ja kivien päälle sekä tienristeyksiin henkiä näkemään. Pihtiputaalla naisilla oli tapana lakaista rikat lattialta pöydän alle ruokailun ajaksi. Näin ikään kuin koottiin henget ottamaan osaa uhriateriaan. Hartolassa taas uskottiin, että laskiaisena syödessä kasvot tuli aina suunnata etelää kohti.

Laskiaisena ruuassa tuli olla ennen kaikkea rasvaa. Keitettiin siansorkista, herneistä tai pavuista rokkaa, vainajien ruokaa, ja leivottiin ja koristeltiin rasvarieskoja, suuria ja pyöreitä, lämmitettiin rasvamakkaroita ja paloiteltiin väelle kesällä tehtyjä juustoja. Syötiin myös ohrarieskaa sekä ohraleipää, jonka sisään oli leivottu sianlihaa. Mitä enemmän rasva kiilteli sormissa ja suupielissä, sitä paremmin kotieläimet lypsivät ja lihoivat. Ruokaa piti olla yltäkylläisesti, eikä pöytää tyhjennetty koko päivänä. Näin runsauden ajateltiin jatkuvan koko vuodeksi. Muurlassa uskottiin, että laskiaisena piti syödä yhdeksän kertaa joka nurkassa. Tämän kun teki, niin koko vuotena ei tarvinnut syödä paljoa, mutta silti lihoi ja tuli terveeksi ja voimakkaaksi. Ruokailun jälkeen Savossa vietiin sikojen kynsiluut metsään uhripihlajan tai uhrikuusen juurelle, sanoen: »Teidän poikanne näitä jälkiä seuratkoon!», jolla tarkoitettiin, että siat menivät seuraavana kesänä metsään. Sormia ei nuoltu eikä liioin syönnin jälkeen pyyhitty, vaan hyvä laskiaisrasva sai kulua niistä käyttöesineisiin, jopa pellavalankaan. Tämäkin edisti tulevaa pellavan kasvua.

Pellavalla olikin merkittävä asema laskiaisen vietossa. Lattiaa lakaistiin moneen kertaan ja rikat vietiin kauas, jotta pellavapelto olisi pysynyt puhtaana ja kasvanut pitkää vartta. Naiset ottivat puhtaan paidan ylleen ja pukeutuivat muutoinkin valkoisiin sekä sukivat tiheään hiuksiaan, jotta pellavan kuidut olisivat tulleet valkeiksi ja pehmeiksi. Lasten päähän tehtiin pitkistä kuiduista laskiaispalmikot. Iltapäivällä nuori väki alkoi hurjan mäenlaskun, jonka aikana huudettiin kotitaloon pitkiä pellavia, hienoja hamppuja, nauriita kuin lautasia, räätiköitä kuin nurkanpäitä. Tytöt laskettelivat tukka hajallaan. Ja mitä pidemmälle kelkka lipui, sitä pidempiä tuli pellavista. Joidenkin talojen emännät toivat lapsille mäkeen hyvää maitovelliä. Sellainen talo menestyi.

Paitsi siis pellavalla myös hiuksilla, kampaamisella ja tuhkalla oli asemansa laskiaisen tavoissa ja uskomuksissa. Laskiaisena neitojen kuului pitää hiuksensa auki ja harjata niitä kiiltäviksi, jotta tulevan vuoden pellavasato onnistuisi. Hirvensalmella uskottiin, että kun laskiaisena kampasi yhdeksän kertaa joka nurkassa, niin pellavista tuli pitkiä ja sileitä. Viron Hiidenmaalla taas tiedettiin, että jos päivän mentyä mailleen on tyttäriä vielä mäen laskussa, niin on varmaa että heillä hiukset säilyvät sileinä ja pitkinä ja pellavat kasvavat pitkää liinaa. Laskiaisen jälkeen vietettiin tuhkapäivää, jolloin siroteltiin Virossa sikojen silmille tuhkaa, jotta ne eivät näkisi mennä viljapeltoon.




Omaan Laskiaiseeni on aina kuulunut hernekeitto jota äiti teki alusta asti itse. Yleensä jos Joulukinkkua oli jäänyt Jouluna, se pakastettiin ja pistettiin Laskiaisena hernekeittoon. Lapsena kävin myös laskemassa mäkeä jos vain oli lunta. Ja totta kai Laskiaispullaa syötiin. Äiti teki pullaa, leikkasi hatun, kaiversi kolon, täytti kolon hillolla (mahtoikohan yleensä olla vadelmahilloa), pisti päälle kermavaahtoa ja päälimmäiseksi pullan hattu.

Pullia olen jo tehnyt ja hernekeittokin on tuloillaan. Ei ole kinkun jämiä mutta palvikinkku ajaa saman asian :) Mäenlaskuunkaan en pääse. En omista pulkkaa, enkä oikein tiedä täällä Hervannassa sopivia mäkiä, jotka eivät olisi jo lasten valtaamia. Mutta voi sitä silti olla hengessä mukana, kun on niin upea päiväkin! Voisi harkita kaakaon juomista parvekkeella viltti harteilla. Nyt kaipaan tosissani sitä omaa taloa, terassia ja kiikkustuolia. Meillä ei ole myöskään saunaa, mutta ei meillä ole ennenkään ollut tapana Laskiaisena saunoa (tavan voisi kyllä aloittaa kun sauna saadaan). Ja täytyy kyllä myöntää, että tiskasin tänään ja minä sen hernekeitonkin teen. En sitten tiedä onko nämä sellaisia "töitä" mitä ei olisi saanut tänään tehdä :D

Today is the Pancake Day and the 8th day is Pancake Tuesday.

Pancake Day (Laskiainen)

Women's celebration. It was forbidden for women to work on Pancake Day. They ensuared for many things luck which belonged to women's works. They ensuared the good growing of flax, hemp and wool and others yard's usefull plaints like turnip, pea and bean. They cooked a soup from peas or beans, sled the hill, went to the sauna and ate sacrifice meal with the deceased spirits. The greasy food brought luck and success.

The Pancake Day was most of all the women's work and industry day. Most of the day's customs and beliefs were directed to women's handicraft materials: flax, hemp and wool or livestock rearing and the plants growing in the yard like turnip, pea and bean. The Christmas time was the men's, grain's and horses's celebration but the Pancake Day was the women's time. The same phenomenon is found in Estonia where it was forbidden for women to work these times. On the other hand it was also forbidden to carve or chop. 

In Finland they had to get spin works done by the Pancake Day because when the day was become longer they started to weave the cloths which demanded more light. Anyway, spinning would have brought bad luck to the family on the future. The houshold chores were ended  on the early afternoon so the works would end up well the whole year. The earlier they water and fed the cows, the earlier they would come back to the home from the forest on the summer and they didn't spend their night there. They went to sauna on daylight, women and men racing. If the men get there first they got bull calves and if women, they got cows. They didn't talk in the sauna so they would be in peace from the insects on summer. With teasing many different ways they tried each others firmness not to talk like pouring cold water in others back. Especially the boys did these kind of branks to girls.

It seems the silence of the Pancake Day's sauna is remain of the remembrance of the deceased spirits visiting among the people. They were silent even when eating, which remembrance the silentness which was obeyed in every sacrifice meal to the deceased spirits. At the Karstula, before the dinner, they sprinkled flour and salt to the table and then draw pentagons there. Then they started eating in silence. People tried to seek the silence with early bathe and rest, still on the daylight, so any noise wouldn't disturb the peace of the spirits. At the Ulvila, on early night, they went to the top of the roofs or stones and road crossings so they could see the spirits. At the Pihtiputaa it was a custom for women to broom the mote under the table. As if they would have gathered the spirits to join them in sacrifice meal. In Hartola they believed they should always be faced to the south while eating on Pancake Day.

On the Pancake Day's food there had to be most of all grease. The soup was made from hooves of the pig, peas or beans, the food of the deceased, and they baked and decorated very greasy unleavened barley breads, big and round, grease sausages were warmed and they chop pieces from the cheeces which were made last summer. They also ate common unleavened barley bread and barley bread with pork baked inside it. The more grease was glistening in the fingers and the corner of the mouth the better domestic animals would milk and fatten. There had to be food abundantly and they didn't empty the table whole day. With this, they believed the abundance would last the whole year. In Muurla they believed they had to eat each time in any corner of the house. If you did this, you didn't have to eat much in the whole year but still you would fatten and you would become healthy and strong. At Savo, after the meal they took the pig's nail bone and took it to the roots of the sacrifice rowan or sacrifice spruce and said "Your lads shall follow your stemps" ("Teidän poikanne näitä jälkiä seuratkoon!") which ment the pigs would get into the forest next summer. Fingers weren't licked and not even wiped, the good Pancake Day grease got to pass off to the utensils even to flax thread. This also improved the growth of flax.

The flax was in a very importand position on Pancake Day. They broomed the floor many times and the mote were taken far away so the flax field would stay clean and grow long stalk. Women dressed in a clean shirt and dressed in white and brushed their hair densely so the flax would be white and soft. They made plaits to chilrdens head from long fibre. On the afternoon youngsters would start the fierce sliding down the hill and while they were sliding they shouted for long flaxs, fine hemps, turnips like plates, rutapagas like head of corners (räätiköitä kuin nurkanpäitä) to their house. Girls would slide with their hair open. The farer sled slide the longer flax would be. Some house's mistresses would bring a good milk gruel to their children on the hill. That kind of a house would success.

Expect the flax also the hair, brushing the hair and ash had their place in Pancake Day's customs and beliefs. Maids have to keep their hair open and brush them shiny so the coming flax crop would succeed. At the Hirvensalmi they believed when you brush you hair in every corner nine times, flax would be long and smooth. At the Estonia's Hiidenmaa they knew if there, at the end of the day, was still some house's girls in the hill their hair would stay smooth and long and flax would grow long. After the Pancake Day was Ashday when at Estonia they scattered ash to pigs eyes so they couldn't see to go to the cornfield.




In my Pancake day there has always belonged the beansoup which my mother used to do herself. Most of the time, if there was leftover Christmas ham it would be freezed and then put into the soup on Pancake Day. When I was a child I also went to slide the hill if there was snow. And of course we ate Pancake Day buns. My mother made buns, cut the head off, carved a hole to the bun, filled the hole with jelly (It might be rasberry jelly), put whipped cream on it and top of it the bun's hat.

I've already made the buns and beansoup is coming. I don't have leftover Christmas ham but smoked ham will do the same :) I don't get to slide hills either. I don't have a slide and actually I don't know good hills here Hervanta which wouldn't already be taken over by children. But I can still be with the spirit, it so wonderful day after all! I could consider of drinking hot chocolate at the balcony with my blanket on my shoulders. Now I really would like to have my own house, terrace and rocking chair. We don't have a sauna either but we haven't even used to go to sauna on Pancake Day (but I could start a custom when we have sauna). And I must admit I already did the dishes and will cook the soup also. I don't know if those are that kind of "work" which was forbidden :D
