Sofi Oksanen - Puhdistus

English below

Takakansi:

"Ikääntynyt Aliide Truu asuu yksin taloaan Viron maaseudulla. Maa on itsenäistynyt edellisenä vuonna ja maareformi on alkanut. Vanhan naisen arjen katkaisee pihalle pyörtynyt parikymppinen Zara.

Puhdistuksen syvintä ydintä on petos, johon epätoivoiset tunteet ajavat.

Back cover:

"Aged Aliide Truu lives by herself in Estonian countryside. Last year the country became independent and land reform started. The life of an old woman is cut by a young girl named Zara who is found fainted in Truus  yard. When resuscitated Zara tells Aliide she is running away from her violent partner. The encounter raises harrowing memories in Aliides mind about her tragic love and choices when she was young which sealed the destinies of all of her loved ones. On the other hand, Zaras situation as forced to her own desperate conclusions shows that although the time is different the persecution hasn't stopped only changed its form.

The deepest center of the Purge is betrayal, driven by desperate feelings. The novel is also telling about the silent history of Estonia by experiences of a one family.
The book gives a voice to the victims of war, communism and repression. Including the humiliations in 1940's the book brings forth the modern exploitation of those women from unstable social conditions."

This book was good. It was good right from the start. Interesting, addictive and disgusting. At times it was very crude to read.

I don't know if I like Aliide Truu. I feel pity of the main character but at the same time I hate her. At times I would just want to shake Aliide from her jealousy to back in to the reality.

It was a shame that the book seemed unfinished. The end came so suddenly, abruptly. There were wonderful portrayals and explanations in the beginning but towards the end they just vanished, as if writer would have got bored of her subject and only wanted to get to the end as soon as possible (I can't understand who could ever get bored about this subject, although numbness could be possible).

I could have gobbled this book  but I restrained myself. I might read some other books from Sofi Oksanen as well now. At least she is now in my 'must to read' list.

I also have to see the movie now I'm finished the book.

It sounds like a harrowing story and I don't think I could cope with reading about such sadness, but on the other hand it's important to tell stories like this one.
