Chloe-tytöllä ei ole koulussa kavereita. Kotonakaan ei ole helppoa, kun äiti on parlamenttiin pyrkivä määräilevä snobi. Ylitäydellisestä siskosta ei myöskään ole iloa. Mutta sitten Chloe tutustuu Herra Lemuun, pahanpäiväisesti löyhkäävään kulkuriin. Haisusta huolimatta he ystävystyvät, ja Chloe majoittaa miehen kotinsa puutarhavajaan. Eikä kaikki ole sitä miltä näyttää, ei varsinkaan herra Lemu.

Viimeinen lukupiiri-kirja tälle vuodelle. Tässäkin teemana ovat kodittomat.

Mitähän tästäkin kirjasta sanoisi... Se oli ihan kiva, tarina oli mukava, opettavainen (asiat eivät ole aina siltä miltä näyttää, suvaitsevaisuus, toisten huomioon ottaminen jne.) ja ihan hauskakin. Itse en tosin nauranut ääneen missään kohdassa mutta uskon, että huumori saattaisi tehota nuorempiin lukijoihin.

Kirjassa oli paljon viittauksia nimenomaan englantilaisiin asioihin ja paljon populaarikulttuuria. Hahmot olivat aika stereotyyppisiä. Oikeastaan melkein kaikki muut hahmot olivat kamalia, ärsyttäviä ja hirveitä paitsi päähenkilöt Chloe ja Herra Lemu sekä isä.

Chloe oli mielenkiintoinen mutta kiusattu tyttöreppana. Hänen perheensä on aivan kamala. Äiti ja pikkusisko Annabelle olivat hirvittäviä. Isä oli ihan mukana mutta aivan äidin tossun alla. Isä olikin ärsyttävän säälittävä ja ressukka mutta onneksi lopussa tämä saa voimaa asettua äitiä vastaan. Muutos tapahtuu äidissä ja Annabellessäkin, tosin ehkä hieman turhia selittelemättä. Äidin ja isän suhteesta ja olemuksesta tulee vahva mielikuva Pokka pitää –sarjan Hyacinth ja Richard Bucketista (Bukée) niin sukunimen lausua myöten kuin muunkin ulkoisen habituksen kautta.

Herra Lemu on koditon joka haisee aivan järkyttävälle. Koko kirjan ajan mietitään mikä on Lemun tarina. Lopulta se paljastuu erittäin traagiseksi ja tuleekin aika puskan takaa. Loppupeleissä mikään ei kuitenkaan selitä sitä miksi Lemulla on niin vääristynyt kuva omasta hygieniastaan.

Varmaan häiritsevintä kirjassa oli kuitenkin koiratietämyksen puute. Mikä koira se sellainen on jota ei kiinnosta syödä jäniksen papanoita?! Hyvin epäuskottavaa xD

Kaikenkaikkiaan kirja oli ihan mukava ja se oli kirjoitettu selkeästi. Se pisti vihastuttamaan ja ihastuttamaan, hiukan hörähtelemäänkin. Kirjan kuvituksesta on vaikea sanoa mitään. Tavallaan se sopii kyllä kirjan muuhun tyyliin mutta itse en ehkä kuitenkaan niin suunnattomasti siitä pitänyt.

It all starts when Chloe makes friends with Mr. Stink, the local tramp. Yes, he smells a bit. But when it looks like he might be driven out of town, Chloe decides to hide him in the garden shed.

Now Chloe’s got to make sure no one finds out her secret. And speaking of secrets, there just might be more to Mr. Stink than meets the eye… or nose.

This was the last book for our reading circle on this year. In this book the theme is also homeless.

What to say about this book... It was ok, the story was nice, educational (things aren’t always what they seem, tolerance, taking others in consideration etc.) and it was also funny. Although, I didn’t laugh out loud while reading it, but I’m sure the humour would work on younger readers.

There were a lot of references to English things and to popular culture. The characters were quite stereotype. Actually, almost every character was horrible, irritating or terrible except the main characters Chloe and Mr. Stink and also dad.

Chloe was interesting but bullied little poor girl. Her family was terrible. Mom and little sister Annabelle were gruesome. Dad was quite ok, but he was too much under mom’s thumb. He was irritatingly pitiful and wretch, but luckily he got courage at the end to stand up against mom. There’s a change in mom and Annabelle too, although there’s no time wasted on explaining the reasons. From the relationship and aspects between mom and dad, I started to think about the characters in TV series Keeping Up Appearance – Hyacinth and Richard Bucket (Bukée). From the pronunciation of the surname to appearance that’s shown to outsiders.

Mr. Stink is homeless who really stinks. Through the book Chloe wonders what is Mr. Stink’s story. It’s been told and it’s very tragic and it surprises the reader. But in the end there’s still no reason why Mr. Stink has so twisted understanding of his own hygiene.

But the most distracting thing in the book was the lack of dog knowledge. What kind of dog wouldn’t be interested on eating hare poop?! It was very unbelievable thing xD

All in all, the book was nice and it was well written. It made me angry and delightful, even made me guffaw a little. It’s hard to say anything about the illustration. It kind of fits to the style in the book, but I didn’t really like it myself much.
