Helsinki 2019. Ronille soitetaan päiväkodista. Olisi parempi tulla käymään. Nuori isä käy läpi vanhempien tyypilliset painajaiset: tapaturma, onnettomuus... Rauma 1957. Matilda kiinnittää auntolan kattoon julisteen tähtitaivaasta palatakseen lähes neljännesvuosisadan takaiseen talviyöhön. Tuona yönä Kuivasjärvellä mitattiin ennätyspakkaset, hevonen paleltui kuoliaaksi, mies syttyi palamaan ja maailmaan syntyi pieni tyttö, joka muutti kolmen suvun elämän.

Talven hallava hevonen on tarina kolmesta perheestä, myyteistä ja ihmisen perimmäisistä peloista. Suomalainen sukupolvitarina kohtaa maagisen realismin ja psykologisen kauhun.

En ole oikein varma pidinkö tästä kirjasta vai en. Se oli täyttä tunteiden vuoristorataa lukemisen aikana ja sen loputtua. Tuntui enemmänkin kuin olisin lukenut novelleja kuin kokonaista romaania. Kirjassa oli kyllä hieman maagista realismia ja ehkä jonkinlaista psykologista kauhuakin, mutta oikeastaan vain pitkässä ensimmäisessä luvussa joka kertoi Ronista ja tämän tyttärestä Siljasta, jolla oli jonkinlainen kyky liikutella tavaroita mielensä avulla.

Ensimmäinen luku olikin kaikkein mielenkiintoisin ja rakastuin kirjaan sitä lukiessani. Se oli pitkä luku, mutta sitä ei vain pystynyt jättämään kesken. Psykologinen kauhu ilmenee seuraajien muodossa, oikeiden tai kuviteltujen. En tiedä miksi tätä parivaljakkoa seurattiin ja luulen, että maailmassa oli muutakin outoa joka jotenkin liittyi peliin jota lapset pelasivat jo hieman huolestuttavalla keskittymisellä. En oikein ymmärtänyt kaikkea mitä tapahtui, kerronta oli välillä hieman epäselvää. Ja pahinta oli, ettei mitään selitetty! Tarina vain loppui. Toivoin, että vastauksia saataisiin myöhemmin. Ehkä nämä liittyivät jotenkin aikaisempiin tapahtumiin ja ihmisiin perheen menneisyydessä.

Kirja kulkee takaperin. Seuraava luku tapahtuu vuonna 2001 kun Roni on teini-ikäinen. Luvussa on eräänlainen dekkari-henkinen vivahde. Ronin äidin, Sannan, poikaystävä Jaco katoaa yhtäkkiä ja ainakin luulen, että tarina yrittää hieman antaa vihjeitä miten ja miksi. Roni liittyi asiaan kai jotenkin, mutta ei oikein selvinnyt miten. Luku oli tosin mielenkiintoinen.

Luvut jatkavat samaa kuviota. Ne kertovat yhden ihmisen tarinan perheen menneisyydessä. Ne olivat kaikki mielenkiintoisia, mutta en löytänyt punaista lankaa. Ja mitä enemmän luin, sitä enemmän aloin toivomaan, että olisin aloittanut kirjan väärinpäin. En pystynyt pysymään mukana kaikista perheenjäsenistä ja suhteista kun ihmiset nuorenivat koko ajan, tekivät eri asioita ja olivat eri ihmisten kanssa.

Hetken päästä kirja alkoikin ärsyttää. Vaikka tarinat selvästi liittyivät toisiinsa, koska henkilöt niissä olivat samaa perhettä ja kaikki olivat jollain lailla kokeneet samat asiat ja perheellä oli omat salaisuutensa, ne vaikuttivat silti yksittäisiltä tarinoilta. Seuraava luku ei oikeastaan antanut minkäänlaisia vihjeitä edelliseen. Mutta toivoin, että viimeistään viimeinen luku selittäisi kaiken. Varsinkin halusin tietää mistä Siljan taidot kumpusivat. Ensimmäinen luku antoi olettaa, että syy olisi löytynyt perheestä.

Ei löytynyt. Viimeinen luku oli oudoin. Minulla ei ole minkäänlaista hajua mistä tämä kirja oikein kertoi. Olin niin hämmentynyt ja vieläkin olen. En vain pysty ymmärtämään tätä kirjaa.

Olen hyvin pettynyt. Maagista realismia oli oikeastaan vain alussa ja ehkä myös lopussa. En ole oikein varma mitä lopussa edes tapahtui... Kirjassa ei ollut varsinaista psykologista kauhua muuta kuin ehkä hyvin pienesti alussa. Tarinat olivat mielenkiintoisia, mutta en vain löytänyt niistä yhteyttä toisiinsa paitsi että henkilöt kuuluivat samaan perheeseen. Jokainen luku jätti rutosti kysymyksiä, liikaa kysymyksiä, mutta mihinkään en saanut vastausta. Minä todella vihaan tällaisia kirjoja. Minä haluan tietää!

Oletan, että kirjassa oli joitain vihjeitä siellä täällä tai ehkä jopa selityksiäkin, mutta en vain pystynyt niitä löytämään. Voisiko joku selittää minulle tämän kirjan?

I'm not really sure if I liked this book or not. It was a full change of emotions while reading it and when it ended. It was more of like reading a few short stories than a whole novel. There was a magic realism in it and maybe some kind of a psychological horror too, but only in the long first chapter which told the story of Roni and his daughter Silja who seems to have some kind of an ability to move object with her mind.

The first chapter was the most interesting one and I really loved the book when reading it. It was a long chapter but I couldn't just leave it unfinished. The psychological horror comes in the shape of a followers, real or imaginary. I don't know why they were followed and I think there were something else odd in the world too, concerning the game all the kids were playing with an alarming focus. I didn't understand everything that was happening, it was all very unclear. And the worst thing was that nothing was explained! It just ended. I hoped there would be answers later on. Maybe this story was somehow related on the others in the book and in the past.

The novel goes backwards. The next chapter is happening in 2001 when Roni is a teenager. There's an exciting detective-story-kind-of-a-thing going on. Jaco, who is Roni's mother's boyfriend, goes missing suddenly and I think the story is trying to give some kind of a clues. But again, the ending told nothing why he got missing and what had happened. Roni did something in the case but I don't really know what. It was interesting story though.

The stories continued the same pattern. They told a story of a one person in this family back in times. They were interesting stories but I didn't find the thread. And while reading more and more, I started to wish I would have started the book backwards. I couldn't keep on track with all the family members because they kept getting younger and younger and did different things and were with different people.

After a while, the novel started to annoy me. Although the stories were obviously linked together because the people were the same family and because of the secrets and events in the family's history, they still seemed to be independent stories. The next chapter didn't give any clues to the previous. But I hoped that in the last chapter there would be some things explained. Especially I would have liked to know why Silja had her ability. The first chapter made me assume that there's a some kind of a reason in the family that would explain everything.

There wasn't. The last chapter was the oddest. I have no clues what the book was all about. I was so confused and still am. I just can't understand the novel.

I'm really disappointed. There were magic realism only at the beginning and maybe at the end. I'm not quite sure what really happened in the end... There wasn't really psychological horror, except a little bit in the beginning again. The stories were interesting, but I just couldn't find the link between them, except that the characters were the same family. Every chapter left me with a questions, too many questions, and nothing was explained. I really hate this kind of novels. I want to know!

I presume there were some kind of a clues along the way, or even an explanation, but I just couldn't find them. Could someone please explain me this book?
