Stephen King - Jälkeen keskiyön / Skeleton Crew

Yritin joskus nuorempana lukea Kingiä. Pyörin pienen kirjastomme kauhuhyllyllä ja yritin löytää luettavaa. En edes muista minkä Kingin kirjan otin hyllystä ja lainasin, mutta onko se ihmekään kun en koskaan kirjaa saanut loppuun asti. Alkumetreille se jäi. Niinkuin melkein kaikki kirjani tuohon aikaan. En vain jaksanut lukea.

Myöhemmin eräs ex-poikaystäväni yritti tutustuttaa minua omaan lempisarjaansa, Kingin Mustaan torniin. Muistaakseni luin ensimmäisen kirjan, mutta en ole varma. En muista ainakaan kirjasta mitään muuta kuin, että en jaksanut lukea sitä, enkä ymmärtänyt siitä mitään.

Koska aikaisemmat King kokemukseni ovat olleet noin vajavaisia, voisinkin pitää tätä kirjaa ensimmäisenä oikeana kosketuksenani Kingin tuotantoon ja sekin on ihme kyllä novellikokoelma. Vielä ihmeellisempää on se, että löysin sen omasta kirjahyllystäni. En ole novellien suuri ystävä. Mutta kirja onkin oikeastaan Isännän.

Tämä on varmaan ensimmäinen kirja jonhon olen ihastunut jo pelkkien alkusanojen jälkeen. Kingin kirjoittamat alkusanat on jo kuin oma pieni tarinansa itsessään. King myös toivoo, että minä, 'Uskollinen lukija', pitäisin tästä kirjasta. Hän epäilee, että lukijat eivät siitä välttämättä pidä yhtä paljon kuin romaaneistaan, koska he ovat unohtaneet novellin tuottaman mielihyvän. Mutta Kingin sanojen mukaan ”--- - novelli on kuin suukko tuntemattomalta pimeässä. Se ei tietenkään ole sama kuin suhde tai avioliitto, mutta suukot voivat olla suloisia ja niissä viehättää juuri niiden lyhyys.” Tämän palopuheen jälkeen odotinkin innolla novellien lukemista, kerrankin. Ja täytyy kyllä myöntää, että pidin lukemastani.

Alkusanoissa pistää silmään myös Kingin tapa olla oikeastaan välittämättä siitä mitä kirjoittaa, hänestä saa kuvan, että hän kirjoittaa juuri sitä mitä haluaa ja sillä sipuli.

Usva

'Usva' on kokoelman ensimmäinen novelli ja myöskin pisin. Se on melkein puolet koko kirjasta. Se voisikin oikeastaan olla jo itsenäinen kirjakin.

Novellissa on hienoja vertauksia. Jotenkin kirjoitustyylistä selviää heti, että kyseessä on jännityskertomus. Suorasanaiset vihjeet kertovat jo paljon tulevasta, ei vain tiedä mitä tai mikä on tullakseen.

Novelli oli jännittävä ja voisin kuvitella, että ehkä hieman Lovecraftmainen, vaikken ole koskaan lukenut mitään Lovecraftilta. Itse tarinassakin sanottaan, että tarinan hirviöt eivät ole kuitenkaan kuolemattomia kuten Lovecraftin monsterit. Novelli pitää hyvin otteessaan, mutta loppu oli pettymys. Kuten kertojakin sanoo, jää se Hitchchockmaisesti lukijan päätettäväksi, mitä tapahtuu. Kertojan isä ei pitänyt tällaisista lopuista ja en muuten pidä minäkään. Haluan tietää mitä tapahtuu! Mikä usva on, mistä se on tullut ja mitä Nuolenpää-projektissa oikein on tehty?

Täällä tiikereitä on

Kun 'Usva' oli jo pienen kirjan kokoinen novelli, oli 'Täällä tiikereitä on' jo huomattavasti lyhyempi, vain muutama sivua. En ehkä ihan tajunnut mitä novellissa haettiin takaa... Tällaiset novellit ovat hankalia eivätkä ne minulle oikein kerro mitään.

Apina

'Apina' novelli alkaa aikalailla samoissa tunnelmissa kuin mikä tahansa kauhutarina jossa on nukke pääosassa ja kuoleman aiheuttajana. Novelli on tosin sen verran pitkä, että mitä tahansa voi tapahtua. Joko nukke onkin oikeasti syypää kuolemiin tai sitten kaikki on vain päähenkilön päässä ja mielikuvissa.

Hieman lukemista vaikeuttaa se, etten oikein teidä kuka on kukin tarinassa.

Novelli oli kuitenkin erittäin hyvä, vaikka minulla olikin pieniä ymmärtämisvaikeuksia välillä. Jännitystä riittää tasaisella tahdilla ja loppu oli miellyttävä. Tästähän voisi saada aikaiseksi vaikka elokuvankin.

Kain karkasi kimppuun

Novelli alkaa erittäin tavallisesti, mutta sitä osaa odottaa, että jotain tapahtuu. Ja sitä jälleen haluaisi vain tietää tapahtumien syyn.

Rouva Toddin oikotie

Tämä novelli oli jo hieman tylsä, ainakin alussa. Siinä ei sinänsä ollut mitään jännittävää, mutta oli se silti ihan ok. Voisin kuvitella tämän novellin Hayao Miyazakin tekemäksi animaatioksi. Nimikin olisi jo kohdillaan. Novellin mukana oli välillä hieman hankala pysyä, mutta epäilen, että se johtuu vain huonosta suommennoksesta(?).

Jauntti

Tämä ei ole oikein kauhua kuin vasta ehkä ihan lopussa. Tämä on scifiä, joka käsittelee teleportaatiota. Sinänsä hauska lukea tätä nyt, koska tässä teleportaatio keksittiin jo 1980-luvulla tai niillä tietämin ja itse luin juuri artikkelin joka kertoi, että tiedemiehet olivat nyt, vuonna 2014, onnistuneet jonkinlaisessa teleportaatiossa (itse novelli on kirjoitettu 1981).

Tässä novellissa isä kertoo lapsilleen laitteen synnystä luultavasti joskus 2050-luvulla. He itsekin ovat juuri matkustamassa teleportaatiolla Marsiin. Tämä novelli olikin erittäin mielenkiintoinen ja ehkä hieman kantaaottavakin joiltain osin. Teleportaation keksiminen ei ole ollut kovin helppoa ja varsinkin eläinkokeiden kuvaukset aiheuttivat allekirjoittaneelle epämiellyttäviä tuntemuksia. Teleportaatio ei tosin ole vielä tuolloinkaan vaaratonta.

Olen jo tähän mennessä huomannut yhden piirteen Kingin kirjoittamisessa, ainakin näissä novelleissa. King aloittaa henkilöiden tutustuttamisen usein lempinimellä ja siitä sitten kertoo jonkun ajan päästä ehkä toisen lempinimen ja lopulta päätyy käyttämään hahmon oikeaa nimeä (ehkä). Tämä on ehkä yksi syy, miksi en oikein tahdo pysyä perässä ketä tarkoitetaan ja kuka puhuu, kun nimet vaihtuvat aika tiuhaankin tahtiin. Ja vaikka ne ovatkin suht samanlaisia on minulla vaikeuksia hahmottaa, että kyseessä on sama ihminen kuin hetki sitten.

Hääkeikka

Tämän novellin myötä palataankin ajassa taaksepäin ja roimasti. Taitaa olla kyseessä jokin 20-30-luku. Tämä novelli oli eräänlainen gangsteritarina vaikkei pääosassa ollutkaan gangstereita vaan he olivat sivuhahmoja. Novelli oli ihan mielenkiintoinen ja löysin hieman samaistumistakin yhden henkilöhahmon, Maureen, kanssa, vaikken olekaan itse vielä 100 kiloinen keijukainen.

Vainoharhainen: Loitsu

Tämä on runo. En sitä ehkä oikein tajua. En oikein osaa lukea runoja. Mutta vainoharhainen kertoja todellakin voisi olla. Mutta en tiedä mitä 'Loitsu' meinaa tässä tapauksessa...

Lautta

Lautta oli jälleen kauhunovelli. Siitäkin saisi varmasti elokuvan, kertomus muuntautuisi niin splätteriksi, komediaksi kuin vakavaksikin kauhuelokuvaksi. Novelli piti hyvin otteessaan vaikkakin lopputulos oli aika selvä.

Kokonaisuutena novellikokoelma oli oikein mukava. Huomasin myös sen, että King käyttää paljon sulkuja tarinoissaan. En oikein ole tajunnut paljoakaan näistä sulku kohdista, mutta ne kai kuvaavat sitä mitä hahmon päässä liikkuu, mitä he näkevät tai mitä tuntevat. Ainakin 'Lautassa' sulkukohdat olivat erittäin hämäriä. En ole oikein varmaa pidänkö sellaisesta tyylistä, se tuntuu vain sekoittavan muutenkin ehkä hieman vaikeasti seurattavaa tekstiä.

Mutta pidin näistä novelleista ja voisinkin lisätä Stephen Kingin kirjalistalleni. Ehkäpä joskus vielä luen sen Mustan torninkin. Pitäisi myös varmaan lukea Kingiä englanniksikin niin saisi selville onko tekstit vain huonosti suomennettuja vai onko Kingin kirjoitustyyli muuten vain hieman vaikea minulle.

I tried to read Stephen King as I was younger. I went around our little library's horror shelf and tried to find something to read. I can't remember which King book I took from the shelf but I think it's because I never finished it. I didn't get long from the start. But I wasn't very much into reading at that time. It just wasn't interesting enough to do.

Many years after, one of my ex boyfriend tried to get me read his favourite series, King's Black Tower. I remember that I might have read the first book but I'm not sure. At least I can't remember anything about the book expect that I wasn't really interested to read it and I understood nothing of it.

Because of my earlier King experiences are so incomplete, I could say that this book is my first real touch in King's books and for my suprise, it's short story collection. And more strange is that I found it from my own book shelf. I'm not really fond of short stories. But, after all, the book is my partner's.

I think this is the first book which has made me to become infatuated with it right after the opening words. The opening words, written by King himself, is like a little story on itself. King is hoping that I, 'the faithfull reader', would like the book. He doubts that readers doesn't necessarily like it as much as the whole novels, because they have forgotten what pleasure short stories brings to us. But like King says himself ”--- - short stories are like a kiss from the stranger in the dark. Of course it's not the same as relationship or marriage but the kisses can still be sweet and it's the shortness of the kiss that charms us.” After this harangue, I waited eagerly to start reading the short stories, for once. And I must admit that I liked what I read.

In the open words there's one thing that sticks out and that is King's style of not caring what he writes. You'll get the picture that he writes what he wants and that's it.

The Mist

'The Mist' is the first short story in the book and it's also the longest. It's almost half of the whole book. Actually, it could be a little book on itself.

There's fine metaphors in the story. And somehow you see immidiately from the writing style that it's a horrorstory. There are some blunt clues which tells something about the coming, you just don't know what or which is coming.

The story was very thrilling and I could imagine it to be a little bit like what Lovecraft has written, although I've never read anything from him. But in the story they even say that the monsters aren't immortal like Lovecraft's monsters. The story grips you but I was very dissapointed about the ending. Like the narrator says, the story ends like Hitchcock ends his stories, the readers can deside what happens next. The narrator's dad didn't like those kind of endings and I'm the same. I want to know what happens! What was the mist, where it came from and what they have done in Arrowhead project?

Here There Be Tigers

When 'The Mist' was like a small book, this short story was notably shorter, it was only few pages. I'm not sure if I got hang of this story... These kind of stories are very hard for me and they doesn't really tell me anything.

The Monkey

'The Monkey' short story starts almost like any other horrorstory where there's a doll in the main part and it's responsible of deaths. Although, the story was so long that anything could happen. I'm not sure if the doll is really responsible of all the deaths or maybe the main character is just paranoid.

It was a little bit hard to follow who was who in the story, so it was a little bit hard to read.

But the story was good, despite the ocassional dificulty on understanding. There's tension in good waves and the ending is nice. This story could be transferred into a movie.

Cain Rose Up

The story starts very ordinary but you know that something will happen. But you are just left for wanting to know the reasons for everything.

Mrs. Todd's Shortcut

This story was a little bit boring at the start. There really wasn't anything exciting in it, but it was still ok. I could imagine this to be an animation by Hayao Miyazaki. The name would be ready for that. It was also a little bit hard to keep going with the story but I think that it is just because of the bad translation(?).

The Jaunt

There's nothing frightening in this story expect maybe a little in the end. This is more of a like scifi which deals with teleportation. It was very funny to read this because in the story teleportation was invented in 80's or somewhere there and I just read an article that scientist have now, in 2014, succeeded in making some kind of a teleportation (and the story has been written in 1981).

In this story, a father is telling his children about the origins of the teleportation in somewhere 2050's, I guess. They are going to travel with it to Mars. The story was very interesting and maybe it brought some opinions into a daylight in some parts. It wasn't easy to invent teleportation and especially the animal testing descriptions aroused some unpleasant feelings in me. But the teleportation isn't really safe in that time either.

I have noticed a one characteristic in King's writing style, at least in these short stories. King starts the introduction of the characters mostly from their nicknames and then later he might tell the other nickname for same charachter and finally he might use the charachter's real name (maybe). I think that this is the one reason why I haven't been able to follow the stories without difficulty, because I don't really know who is who and who is talking, because the names are changing all the time. And even though the names are quite similar to each others, it's still hard for me to conceive that it's the same person.

The Wedding Gig

With this short story we go way back in time. It might happen in 20's or 30's. This story is some kind of a gangster story, although there isn't gangster in the main characters but they are in sub charachters. It was interesting story and I found a charachter, Maureen, to whome I can relate to, even though I don't wight 100 kilos yet.

Paranoid: A Chant

This is a poem. I'm not sure if I get it. I really can't read poems. But I'm pretty sure that the narrator is paranoid. But I don't know what the 'Chant' part means...

The Raft

This again was a horrorstory. This would make a wonderful movie too, it could be a splatter, comedy or a serious horrorfilm. It keeps you in its grip, although the ending is quite obvious.

As a whole the, short story collection was very nice. I noticed that King also uses a lot of curves in his stories. I didn't quite get the curves but I think they tried to illustrate the things the character was thinking, seeing or feeling. Especially in 'The Raft' the curves were very vague. I'm not quite sure if I like the style, they just seemed to confuse me more.

But I really liked these short stories so maybe I could add Stephen King in my list. Maybe someday I will read the Black Tower too. I should also think of reading King in English so I could see if the translations are just poorly made or is it just King's writing style that is too hard for me.
