Kuvaus takakannesta:

Näiden kahden yhteys on jotain sellaista josta itsekin on unelmoinut teinitytöstä asti.

Van Houten on ristiriitainen henkilö.

Ehkä kaikkein ristiriitaisimmat hahmot kirjassa olivat Hazelin vanhemmat.

Tätä ajatustapaa kuvastaa mainiosti esimerkiksi Leijonakuningas 2:sen kappale Hän sussa on (He Lives in You).

Kirja siis pisti miettimään paljon asioita. Se oli upea kirja. Raaka, todellinen, rakastettava – se oli elämää. Harkitsen tosissani kirjan ostamista.

”Masennus on kuolemisen sivuvaikutus. (Syöpäkin on kuolemisen sivuvaikutus. Niin kuin oikeastaan melkein mikä tahansa).” (s. 11)
”Tulee sellainen aika, jolloin me kaikki olemme kuolleet --- Me kaikki. (s. 21-22)
”Ihmiset antavat joskus lupauksia tajuamatta, mitä lupaavat.” (s. 72)
”Huolehtiminen on jälleen yksi kuolemisen sivuvaikutus.” (s. 76)
”Aikalaisuutemme keskittyy taisteluihin, joissa kukaan ei menetä mitään arvokasta, paitsi todennäköisesti henkensä.” (s. 166)
”--- kaihomielisyys on kuolemisen sivuvaikutus.” (s. 256)
”Ymmärrän hetki hetkeltä paremmin, mitä tarkoittaa sana nöyryyttävä.” (s. 261)
”Eikä syöpäkään ole oikeastaan pahis. Syöpä haluaa vain elää.” (s. 267)
”Kuvitelmat omasta kuolemattomuudesta ovat kuolemisen sivuvaikutusta.” (s. 287)
”---hautajaiset ovat eläviä varten.” (s. 296)
”Ne olivat hautajaiset. Ja ihan samanlaiset kuin kaikki muutkin hautajaiset.” (s. 297)
”Omnis cellula e cellula --- Kaikki solut syntyvät soluista. Jokainen solu syntyy edeltävästä solusta, joka taas on syntynyt edeltävästä solusta. Elämä syntyy elämästä. Elämä synnyttää elämää synnyttää elämää synnyttää elämää.” (s. 300)
“--- maailmankaikkeus halusi tulla huomatuksi.

The Fault in Our Stars (2012)
Tähtiin kirjoitettu virhe

Description from Goodreads.com:

Despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel’s story is about to be completely rewritten.

Insightful, bold, irreverent, and raw, The Fault in Our Stars is award-winning author John Green’s most ambitious and heartbreaking work yet, brilliantly exploring the funny, thrilling, and tragic business of being alive and in love.

Warning: Too long post
Next time in the children and youth literature reading circle at Seinäjoki library we are reading something from John Green. I chose The Fault in our Stars. I’ve wanted to read the novel a long time ago after I watched the movie. It was a fine movie! And this is even finer novel! I’m thinking of buying the novel for myself because I had trouble not to underline the library book. There were so much to quote, that’s one of the things why the novel is so wonderful. I’ve never ever had the urge to underline something in a book until now!

I love the humour in the novel, and how all was so genuine, realistic. The humour is black and it fits perfectly for characters and their situations. What else can you do but to make humour from the situation. With humour you survive! I hope I won’t lose my sense of humour someday. Sometimes it happens and it’s scary. I’ve seen it happen and it was sad. But sometimes, it’s just too hard to keep the humour in your life. But still, you should be able to make jokes about anything! The realism in the novel is wonderful. Things are told as they are, plainly, as they should be told. Sickness isn’t pretty and there’s no glory in it. There’s awfully lot of truths in the novel and it has the view of life which I relate to, and also because of that, the novel felt very personal.

The relationship between Hazel and Augustus is amazing! The characters are great, especially Augustus who seems almost too perfect. These two have the connection which I’ve been dreaming of from teenaged girl. Luckily, there were so much time between watching the movie and reading the novel, I couldn’t quite remember what happened to these two. My memory returned little by little but that was OK. The plot and how it kept going on was splendid.

Unfortunately, Isaac were left too much in the background. Isaac had his moments and it was admirable how much the novel told about Isaac, even though the story concentrated on Hazel and Augustus. With the little details we got to see how wonderful relationship Isaac and Augustus had and Hazel got her part too from Isaac. Still, I would have liked to know more about Isaac. But, maybe there’s so much of it that it would need another book just about him. There’s an idea Green! You should write The Fault in Our Stars again, but from the Isaac’s point of view! I would definitely read it!

What about Van Houten then... the “bad guy”, so to speak. Van Houten was conflicting character. First, you hate him, but in the end you kind of start to understand him, even pity a little. I admit, with all his prickness and especially because of his way to express himself, the character remained quite distant for me. I didn’t quite understand those letters because of the writing. I’m sure there were a lot of interesting references, metaphors, philosophy, truths, but I couldn’t get hang of it. I think I should have known more literature and philosophy to understand Van Houten better. But still, I got interested about An Imperial Affliction. I’m quite sure it would be very hard for me to read if it would be anything like Van Houten’s letters, but it seemed very interesting novel. The novel was described so well that I really thought it to be a real novel! Why not to write it too Green! Or someone else!

Maybe the most complex characters in the novel were Hazel’s parents. I just couldn’t get hang of them at all. The most confusing thing was that at the beginning of the novel the parents seemed very tight-ass, overprotective and fussy, especially the mom. Then suddenly, they are joking around with very dark humour and are more laid-back, but just before the end they start to act like tight-ass and insensitive parents again. Maybe Hazel’s parents had some kind of deeper journey here but I just didn’t notice it or couldn’t get hang of it? Of course the novel deals with the suffering of the parents too and especially Hazel is so worried of the pain she causes to her parents. Still, the parents are left more aside. Maybe there would be an idea for a third book, how The Fault in our Stars goes from Hazel’s parents view.

It was very confusing to find something as familiar as Maslow’s hierarchy of needs in the novel. I just wrote an essay about it on spring and maybe there were even exam about it. I don’t remember anymore. Anyway, in the novel, Maslow’s hierarchy of needs was panned completely. It’s said to be bullshit. But on the other hand, it is, for example from Hazel’s point of view. According to Maslow, Hazel is stuck in the second step of the pyramid – she can’t feel safe, because of the sickness. That’s why Hazel shouldn’t be able to long for love, respect, art or anything else, and that’s just bullshit: sickness doesn’t take your desire to do art or ponder philosophy. The need for it just changes along with the sickness (p. 232, Finnish edition).

I think Green has read his Richard Dawkins or at least get to known of the world’s most famous atheist’s thoughts. There’s so much references to those thoughts in the novel which also Hawkins has brought out. These point of views are strongly my opinions too and that’s why the novel was also so pleasant reading for me. I also liked Hazel’s (and Van Houten’s) thoughts about funerals (and death generally). Like Hazel, I do understand funerals as a ritual and that they are very important to some people, especially for those who believe in some kind of god. But for atheists like me, funerals are more difficult matter, especially because they are so related in religion. I know what you’re supposed to do there, how to act and how the ritual goes. And I also know it’s very important for some that the funeral will go on exactly as it should. But when you have a different kind of grief and when you don’t really need a set rituals at all to grieve, but you would just like to grieve in your own ways, you start to question things. Why funerals are so stuck in with its rituals? Because of these norms and manners which are tightly tied into our cultures, mostly we just have to suck up our own desires (or do something we wouldn’t want to do) to please others. Each one grieves differently, but still it’s some kind of a taboo and still we are doing things within the norm. It’s conflicting. And because of these kind of ponderings I’m still lost in my grief. I believe the novel has helped me little to process things and gave me hope that there are others who also think differently like me, but I think I still have a lot to process yet.

Death is also interesting subject, but it’s very hard one to talk about especially when you are the atheist one. It seems to be so related to religion that even when you talk about it with those who claim to be nonreligious, doesn’t maybe belong in any church or are even atheists, almost always the conversation turns into some kind of heaven, after life etc. There’s so much mystique, myths, uncertainty, doubt, so I do understand why people are hoping there’s something after death. It brings comfort thinking that someday you will see your loved ones, friends etc. again. But, I would still like to understand more this viewpoint. Especially because I believe there’s nothing after death. But, what I do believe is that we kind of attain mortality through our children, through the continuity of DNA. I have pieces, a bit of DNA, from all of my ancestors. In a way they “live” inside me, in my DNA, and if I would ever have children of my own, I would live as long as my children would have their own children and if they would have children and if they would have children. I think it’s a fine thought and after all, it’s scientifically true. I think it’s even more fine than thought about some kind of heaven, after life or reincarnation etc. There’s a wonderful song in Lion King 2 that describes this perfectly – He Lives in You.

As you might have noticed, the novel put me think of lot of things. It was wonderful book. Raw, realistic, loving – it was life. I’m really considering buying the novel. I’m lucky I read it. I’ve heard some complaints about the translation but I didn’t notice any major problems, just few things that could have been translated better. I could read the book in English too. Maybe after few years. I will watch the movie soon again. I just borrowed it from my friend.

I know the post is awfully long already and congratulations if you made it here, but here are my favourite parts from the novel (I hope I can find them in English in Goodreads, if not, I’m trying to do them justice with my own translations):

”Depression is a side effect of dying. (Almost everything is, really).” (Goodreads)
”There will come a time when all of us are dead. All of us. There will come a time when there are no human beings remaining to remember that anyone ever existed of that our species ever did anything. There will be no one left to remember Aristotle or Cleopatra, let alone you. Everything that we did and built and wrote and thought and discovered will be forgotten and all of this will have been for naught. Maybe that time is coming soon and maybe it is millions of years away, but even if we survive the collapse of our sun, we will not survive forever. There was time before organisms experienced consciousness, and there will be time after. And if the inevitability of human oblivion worries you, I encourage you to ignore it. God knows that’s what everyone else does.” (Goodreads)
”Some people don’t understand the promises they’re making when they make them.” (Goodreads)
”Love is keeping the promise anyway.” (Goodreads)
”Worry is yet another side effect of dying.” (Goodreads)
”Contemporaneity, --- specializes in the kind of battles wherein no one loses anything of any value, except arguably their lives.” (Goodreads)
”It’s badly said that there’s meaning only that kind of life and death which have a purpose.” (Translation)
”We are speaking of a novel, --- not some historical enterprise.” (Goodreads)
”--- this childish idea that the author of a novel has some special insight into the characters in the novel… it’s ridiculous. That novel was composed of scratches on a page, ---” (Goodreads)
”Like all sick children, --- you say you don’t want pity, but your very existence depends upon it.” (Goodreads)
”You are side effect --- of an evolutionary process that cares little for individual lives. You are failed experiment in mutation.” (Goodreads)
”Have you ever stopped to think --- why your stupid questions are so important to you?” (Translation)
”Four Aron Franks without museums, without historical markers, without anyone to mourn them.” (Goodreads)
”--- it’s not like the Nazis had a monopoly on evil.” (Goodreads)
”--- most parents don’t know really their children.” (Goodreads)

P.S. I watched the movie. I was a “little bit” confused when at the end of the DVD I borrowed, I noticed there wasn’t that one and only scene which I remembered perfectly. I search for a reason for this and found out that no, I don’t have psychic talents and I haven’t seen the missing scenes in my mind, but there’s some kind of extended version of the film which apparently I saw few years ago. I have to admit, I hate those director’s cut extended exclusive big bang wow versions. Or actually I hate those “incomplete” movies. There’s just two option, you show everything or not. Those extended bullshits are just rip-off. Why there has to be two or three kinds of DVDs, and everyone has something more included -_- I want one movie which is as it is, with some extras or without. One DVD with one price!

But back to the movie. It wasn’t as good as the novel. It was still very good and I found out that I’m definitely a visual person, the movie made me cry more than the novel. But there were so much missing in the movie. In the novel, there were much more black humour and the characters were even more distant in the movie, and I’m not quite sure if I liked the girl who played Hazel. Something wasn’t just correct. The novel’s view of life was also little bit different in the movie, in my opinion. But it was great. And I understand you have to shorten novels and straighten things up in a script. But these are definitely a whole different pieces but they support each others nicely. Still I would hope that those who watched the movie will read the novel too!

Nadja Sumanen: Rambo

Sumanen, Nadja

Kuvaus kirjan takakannesta:

Tunsinko olevani erilainen?

Kasiluokan lyhytpnnaiseen poikaan on lyöty jo monta leimaa. Mutta Rambo ei ole luovuttaja. Hän on päättänyt pysäyttää ilmastonmuutoksen, tehdä käsilläroikkumisen maailmanennätyksen ja nähdä äidin nousevan masennuksen suosta.

Aamu-uinti. Aamupala. Makaronilaatikko. Kello kolmen pullakahvit. Paratiisi on lähempänä kuin Rambo osaa uneksiakaan. Kesäiset viikot äidin poikaystävän Rotan kesäpaikassa tuovat elämään välittäviä aikuisia. Ja tytön nimeltä Liina.

Nadja Sumanen voitti esikoisteoksellaan Otavan nuortenromaanikilpailun.

Itse ainakin sain kohdan sopimaan täydellisesti musiikkiin.

Description from the back cover:

Did I feel different? No I didn’t. I was. That’s why the school went how it went. I couldn’t stay on the bench, but tried to pour under it. If they’d let me choose, I would have been just a normal guy called Jani.

A boy in his eight grade has already many labels stuck on him. But Rambo isn’t quitter. He has decided to stop the climate warming, broke the record of hanging from hands and get her mother from the depths of depression.

Morning swim. Breakfast. Macaroni casserole. Coffee and bun at three o’clock. The Paradise was nearer than Rambo had ever could dream of. Summer weeks spent in cottage owned parents of mother’s new boyfriend, Rat, brings some caring adults into Rambo’s life. And also a girl called Liina.

With her first work Nadja Sumanen won the Otava youth literature competition.

I read the novel for reading circle of Seinäjoki library which concentrates on children and youth literature, which is also my very first reading circle I’m in. I must admit, I wouldn’t never have taken this novel into read without the reading circle. I also admit that I choose novels by their cover and this wouldn’t be my chose because of the cover. And I don’t know why but I thought this to be some kind of sport novel and I don’t like sport themes either…

Luckily, I read the novel! It hooked me up straight at the first chapter! Rambo was very interesting character straight at the beginning.

Rambo is quite ordinary eight grader, although he is taking care of his depressed mother, and at the same time he lives very poor life with no routines. Apparently, he also has some anger management issues and he’s been labelled into problem child/youngster and socially excluded. But in my opinion, Rambo was far from problem youngster, what I got from the novel, told by Rambo himself. Deep inside Rambo is innovative, caring, climate change stopper, philosophic, imaginative and tough young man who doesn’t care what others think. Along the novel Rambo seems more mature than he is but at times the teenage years are shown. This was a little bit confusing at times. But beneath the hard shell there’s just a boy who would rather watch Moomins than play X-rated console games with friend who talks only with swear words. Luckily, Rambo gets a different summer in the cottage owned by the parents of his mother’s boyfriend, Risto.

That cottage was wonderful! At the beginning of autumn it was painful to read such lovely summer idyll descriptions! I missed the summer and I would like to have my own cottage. Residents were also wonderful. Risto’s parents were interesting and wonderful folk. Annikki
“… didn’t pretend to be more than she was and that gave the others permission to be what they were, as they were.” p. 39.
We need more those kind of people! Erkki was also very interesting grumpy old man whose world you’ll get into little by little while reading further.

The most annoying characters were definitely Liina and her parents. I also didn’t like Risto at the beginning. Liina was very annoying teenaged girl who didn’t care about anything (except her phone and horses). The family relations between Liina and her parents were awful to read, there you’ll see parents who shouldn’t be parents. I pitied Liina and I think that some of her bad manners were caused because of the bad relationships with her parents. But Liina also had her good moments.

There were a lot of interesting characters in the novel and soon I found out that everything isn’t just black and white. The theme seemed to be that everyone has problems. Every character had his or her own problem or two, and all relations were somewhat difficult. Some problems were solved but others were left unresolved or shallow. Nevertheless, it was interesting to read about relations, problems and views of three different generations. I think I saw them little bit more different than those who were the main group for this novel. In my point of view, the oldest generation was like my own parents, the middle generation was about my age and the youngest was the new generation.
The mood in the novel was jumping rapidly but it was a good thing. There was hard depression, beautiful summer idyll, teenage angst, crush, scary and distressing parts but next calming and interesting conversations.

There’s even a music and other novels in this. One of my favourite parts in the novel was the car drive with Miljoonasade’s Olkinanainen song playing in the background. If possible, I’d recommend listening the song at the same time while reading the part. For me, it fit perfectly into the scene. The scene was distressing but still wonderful at the same time. The other favourite part in the novel was the only sport scene (you would have never guessed!) at the end of the novel.

The novel deals with many different difficult themes, even though there’s only 238 pages. In the end, many problems get solved but not all. I did made some tears while reading the novel but that might be just because my own life situation at the moment. The situations in the novel are so close but still so far from my life. But I would like to quote Erkki on this
“Life goes on as it does.” p. 214.

  9. Mitä haluaisit lukea loppuvuonna?
  10. Mitä ovat kirjalliset haaveesi?
  11. Mikä lukemisessa on parasta?

Taas hankalia kysymyksiä :D

2.       Minkä kirjan hahmon haluaisit parhaaksi ystäväksesi?
Tämä on vaikea kysymys. Kirjoissa on niin paljon ihania hahmoja! Haluaisin tutustua kaikkiin ja ystävystyäkin! :D Jos valitsin kirjoista joita olen nyt lähiaikoina lukenut sanoisin varmaankin Tanskandogi Honeyn H.Y. Hannan The Big Honey Dog Mysteries –kirjoista.

6.       Kuka on suosikkikirjailijasi?
En ole ihan varma onko minulla suosikkikirjailijaa. Luulen, että pidän ehkä eniten Trudi Canavanista, ainakin hän on oikeastaan ainoa kirjailija jonka tuotoksia seuraan. Ja haluaisin lukea hänen kaikki teoksensa. Joten ehkä hän on sitten suosikkini.

7.       Millainen kirjan miljöö kiehtoo sinua eniten?
Maalaismaisemat, metsät, fantasia maailmat, vanhat pienet kaupungit, kylät, kartanot. Etköhän saa kiinni ideasta?

8.       Mikä on viimeisin ostamasi kirja?
Se oli joko H.Y. Hannan The Big Honey Dog Mysteries -kirjat Amazonista tai sitten Charles Dickensin Pickwick-kerhon jälkeenjääneet paperit kirpputorilta.

9.       Mitä haluaisit lukea loppuvuonna?
Kaiken?

10.   Mitä ovat kirjalliset haaveesi?
Saada enemmän aikaa jotta voin tehdä jotain? Haluaisin todella kääntää H.Y. Hannan The big Honey Dog Mysteries –kirjat. Haluaisin myös kirjoittaa oman lastensarjan tai kuvakirjoja. Minulla on muutama idea mielessä. Minulla on myös suuri unelma rock –musikaalista.

11.   Mikä lukemisessa on parasta?
Nautin kauniista kirjoista.

  1. Missä kirjallisessa maailmassa haluaisit asua?
  2. Kirja johon palaat ajoittain aina takaisin?
  3. Mikä on lempipaikkasi lukea?
  4. Mikä oli viimeisin kirja jonka luit?
  5. Mitä yleensä syöt elokuvateatterissa?
  6. Mikä on lempi kahvilasi/pubisi/ravintolasi?
  7. Milloin viimeksi kävit kirjastossa?
  8. Mitä teit siellä?
  9. Minkä elokuvan näit viimeksi?
  10. Mikä on lempi vuodenaikasi?
  11. Kumpi on parempi: kirje vai sähköposti?

I got Liebster Award a long time ago. Now I got it again, but this time it’s much more beautiful. Thank you Mira from Neverendingly.

These are the rules:
  1. Thank the one who gave you the award and link back to one’s blog.
  2. Display the award in your blog.
  3. Answer the 11 questions made by the giver.
  4. Name 5-11 blogs who would also deserve this award and who has less than 200 readers.
  5. Make 11 questions to those awarded so they can answer them.
  6. Put the rules of the award in to the post
  7. Inform those blogs who you decided to give the award to and link your post to them so they know what to do.

These are my questions from Mira:
  1. What was the best book you read last year?
  2. Which book’s character you would like to have as your best friend?
  3. Which book you would like everyone to read?
  4. Which book you read because someone recommended it, but you didn’t like it?
  5. Which book you wish you would have written it yourself?
  6. Who is your favourite author?
  7. What kind of milieu fascinates you the most in a book?
  8. What was the last book you bought?
  9. What would you like to read before the year ends?
  10. What are your literary dreams?
  11. What’s best in reading?

Again, difficult questions :D

1.       What was the best book you read last year?
Let me check my Goodreads account :) Wow, I read many books that could be nominated as best book! I think I give the Best Book award to Läpi yön by Terhi Rannela. And why? You can find out from the blog post I wrote about the book.

2.       Which book’s character you would like to have as your best friend?
This is tricky question. There’s so many wonderful characters in books! I would like to know them all and be friends with everyone! :D If I could choose from the books I’ve read lately I would say Honey the Great Dane from The Big Honey Dog Mysteries by H.Y. Hanna. She’s such a sweet giant. And of course I would like to understand her and she could understand me :D

3.       Which book you would like everyone to read?
There’s so much wonderful books! And I know many are already reading them. I know that you are sick of hearing The Big Honey Dog Mysteries by H.Y. Hanna by now, but I would really like the book series to get more publicity. Although, it’s difficult to say if EVERYONE needs to read it but at least most :)

4.       Which book you read because someone recommended it, but you didn’t like it?
Easy question! I just read one! Hullu luokka by Kaisa Ikola and Minna Kulmala. You can read about it here.

5.       Which book you wish you would have written it yourself?
Of course you want to be a bestseller author! It would have been wonderful if it would have been I who wrote Harry Potter, not J.K. Rowling :D Modest, am I? xD Although, I would have changed the ending…

6.       Who is your favourite author?
I’m not really sure if I have favourite author. I think I like Trudi Canavan the most, at least she’s almost only author I try to follow what she’s publishing. And I would like to read everything she writes. So maybe she’s my favourite.

7.       What kind of milieu fascinates you the most in a book?
Country sides, forests, fantasy worlds, old little towns, villages, mansions. You’ll get the idea?

8.       What was the last book you bought?
It was either all the The Big Honey Dog Mysteries books by H.Y. Hanna from Amazon or The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club by Charles Dickens from flea market.

9.       What would you like to read before the year ends?
Everything? I don’t really set reading goals. It’s good if I could read at least something I want (and not only school books again when school starts on September). But maybe I could want to try to read the Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club by Charles Dickens which is waiting for me in my student apartment at Seinäjoki.

10.   What are your literary dreams?
To get more time to do something? I would really like to try translate The Big Honey Dog Mysteries by H.Y. Hanna. I would also like to write my own children’s series or write some picture books. I have few ideas on my mind. I also have a big dream about rock musical.

11.   What’s best in reading?
Reading itself. And a good stories of course! Those times are priceless when you really get into the world and forget everything else. It’s rare, but when it happens, it’s magic! And I love books. Just looking and touching them is enough for me. I enjoy a beautiful book too.

So, that’s it. I should think some who I would like to give this to… It’s very hard. I don’t know who to give this… At the moment I haven’t really have time to read blogs, although I do have about 100 blogs I’m following. Maybe someday I can still come back to you all.

I don’t even know if someone is reading my blog… Well, I know there are some. So please, take this award as a token of gratitude for still following me and my silly attempts of writing anything worth of posting. And if you do accept this award and answer all the questions, please let me know so I can come back to you to read at least that post :D

Here are my questions:
  1.  Which literature world would you like to live in?
  2. The book you come back at times?
  3. Which is your favourite place to read?
  4. Which was the last book you read?
  5. What do you eat in cinema?
  6. Your favourite café/pub/restaurant?
  7. When was the last time you went to the library?
  8. What did you do there?
  9. Which was the last movie you saw?
  10. Which is your favourite season?
  11. Which one you prefer the most: letter or email?

Anna Hallava: Operaatio Huulituli / Operation Lipfire

Hallava, Anna
Operaatio Huulituli
WSOY, 2016
s. 302

Fantasianmakuinen chick lit –herkkupala nuorille.

Hyvä on, minun on tunnustettava, menin tuolle matkalle kirjan loputtua. Olen edelleen sama itseni :D

Operaatio Huulituli

A Fantasy and chick lit treat for youths.

In this novel, which is the sequel for the bubbling book Sammakkoprinsessa, Ofelia is trying to avoid her kissing ban with a potion – with catastrophic consequences.

14-year-old Ofelia is living double life – she’s an ordinary teenager in secondary school but in the fairy kingdom she’s soon to be initiated as Crown princess. In both realities there’s one big problem – how to get a boyfriend – and because of the Queen’s Fairy present it’s more than challenging. At least before Ofelia hears about the forbidden potion, Huulituli…

Operaatio Huulituli is full of funny mishaps and girl power that are typical in chick-lit genre and the ending is just pure melted sugar!

14-year-old main character, fairies, boy problems, chick lit… not my cup of tea. Or was it?

It really was! Who would have thought that I would love this book so much! Well, OK, I loved the first one too. This was a sequel to the Sammakkoprinsessa which I read last year. I think I liked this even better. It was perfect summer reading. Light, fun, fast, easy. I really hope that there’s another sequel coming. The novel ended with some unfinished things.

I must admit that Ofelia, the main character, was a little bit annoying at times. But hey, who teenage girl wouldn’t be!? But luckily she has her moments when she really starts to show some responsibility and real thinking. Those were fine moments. There were also wonderful hooks in the novel which kept you guessing what would happen next and kept you wanting to read more and more. And then there’s the humour and language. The language is just perfect, even though I think it’s something that now-a-days teenagers would use and some words are just too sweet, even for me. But I think that is just good thing. Authors should keep on track what youths are doing and saying so they can write to them. The humour is like in any chick lit, very amusing.

I think I would have loved the book when I was a teenager. Oh, those imaginary trips I would have taken after reading, adventuring in fairyland, being a crown princess, meeting cute boys, having a bodyguard at all times… OK, I must admit, I did went on that trip just after I finished the book. I’m still me :D

I really, really wish there would be another sequel! I sneaked up Anna Hallava’s pages and found out that she is publishing book next year but not for this series. There’s no mention about another sequel. But there must be! I want to know what happens next. There’s still unfinished things!
