Vapunpäivä / The First of May

English below

Vapunpäivä

1. toukokuuta.

Kyllä me jotain tehtiin.

Tältä näytin / This is what I looked like

The First of the May / Vappu

The 1st of the May. Like the Day of Jyri on the First of May the cows and lambs were let outside even if there would still be snow in the ground. In some places they "clocked", in other words they hang bells on they clothes and ran around the village making a lot of noise. At Kurikka it was told adult women hang bells to their hems and dressed in whatever strange they could find, men did have only one big bell. This rambunctious custom was ment to assist milk supplies. At Satakunta, a region in the Western Finland they played cows bells and yelled "Vappu tuu, Vappu tuu, latoon tuu, tuu-tuun" (Vappu come, Vappu come, come to the barn, co-come / tuu-tuut ). In some places they held also Shout night, they burned the fires and yelled wolves out of the land. On the First of the May they repaired water birds nest boxes hanging by the forestlakes banktrees aka "uuttu" (birdhouse) or "hontto".

Now days the First of the May (Vappu) is workers celebration and especially students are celebrating viciously and the biggest celebrations are, like everything in Finland, in the eve of the holiday but the celebration is of course continueing the next day, atleast by those who are able to. It seems Vappu is now more like a city festival and different cities have their own Vappu traditions. The most common traditions are likely to be Vappu picnic and all the graduated (old and new) putting their graduation hat on in a big celebration in the middle of the city all together accompanied with speeche and other "formal" things. And of course there's a lot of drinking and reveling all the time. Baloons and streamers ("serpentiini", colourful paperstrings) are very important props as all kinds of costumes and other strange wearings. There's mead to drink, doughnuts and funnel cakes to eat and of course a lot of sparkling wine too.

Our The First of The May eve was rambling in the woods with few friends. We went to the Hervanta's Makkarajärvi (Sausace lake) to make campfire, enjoying good company, food, drink and most of all the peace! Not like the other celebrators we didn't want to go to the crowded city where there would be people like ants in their nest. We were also celebrating two of our friends birthdays so we had a princess cake with us and a suitable kids Winnie The Pooh hats on our heads :) The weather was unstabel. The sun was shining and it was warm, next we got rain more and less and it was cold, then again sun was shining and again we got rain. It was like this all the time. But we did still have a great time!

I had made myself some mead for this trip (and as it is Vappu). It succeed well. The whole eve I drank only mead because I had to go to the work later at night. At 12pm we went to Makkarajärvi, at 4pm we started to walk back to our apartment and at 5:25pm I was already in the buss going for work. At 6pm I started my work at the theater's cloakroom and at 9:15pm I got home. I must admit it surely didn't irked me not to spend our Vappus at the city. There were people like ants in their nest! Just shocking! And above all most of them were very drunk. My work was quite ordinary and quiet, except for few drunken troublemakers. Yet still it was really nice to work! Like always.

It did irk me that my Vappu eve end so quickly. When I went to work there still were some friends at our apartmert watchin ice hockey but when I came back home there was only my partner. I were a little bit disappointed, I admit. I were so excited at the buss way at home because I thought now I can start properly celebrate with a good company. When I opend our apartment door it was very silent so I thought maybe they went to the bar after all and then I heard my partner saying hello and I found there wasn't others anymore. That was my Vappu eve.

I must admit I really don't remember what we did in the Vappu... We surely did something. I'm not sure if it was that time we went to my partner's friend and watched a lot of Chthulhu movies and played role board game named Arkham Horror... But I'm not sure. It's this youth dementia :D or is this already initial dementia?

And there wasn't any snow spots left on the ground. There hasn't been snow anymore for a while. Although so was foretelled few months ago.

Huutoyöt ja Jyrin päivä / Shout nights and the day of Jyri

English below

Shout nights and the day of Jyri

Shout nights on the 13th and 22nd of April, The day of Jyri on the 23rd of April. In a small area at the Savo Summerday (suvipäivä) and the eve of the day of Jyri (23rd of April) is called Shout nights. Those times people used to shout to the woods: "Hyvä Jyrki, Paha Jyrki, pane hurtat kiinni suviöistä talviöihin" (Good Jyrki, Bad Jyrki, keep the dogs hold from summernights to winternights). In the same time they made fires on the hills and shepherds playd their horns. This way they tried to drive away spring hungry wolves from the lands for summertime because the day was the old day when they let the cattle out. For the old folk it was a real celebration to let the cattle out to the field and with affording sacrifice they might get the deceased people to be favourable to their growth of grain and for the cattle.

In the middle of the Ostrobothnia they talked there about "jyrynajo" (the drive of the jyry). The children took bells to their necks on the Day of the Jyri and ran around the house and in the nearby forest keeping loud noise. In the Savo and on the northeast Ostrobothnia there were also adults with the children banging woods together to drive the wolves away. At Satakunta they ate ritualistic meal for the beginning of the seedtime work, the headline of the food was the planting breads which were baked for Christmas. Fishermen knew the perch would start their spawning period.

On the day of Jyri you had to agree with silence. Nobody wasn't allowed to work, chop, make noise or bang the doors. Even the hinges of the doors were greased so they wouldn't creak. People did this all because they tried to avoid summer thunder to visit so the crop wouldn't get hurt. Otherwise they did yell a lot all the time. At the woods you coudn't cut any branch on the day of Jyri, if you did this it would stop all the growing for the whole year. (This is quite incongruity to what it was said earlier but there are different customs in different parts of Finland).

At the south of the Savo they hold sacrifice meal. They brewed beer and cooked food which was put to the table early in the morning but they didn't taste them before every dish were put in their own plates as if sacrificed. Then they "drank all day and didn't work". Granander told at the day of Jyri people would sacrifice milk or even whole milk chunks under the sacred trees.  At Savo and Karjala they took a  knapsack of Karelian pasties to someones sacrifice tree. There they made a nail from the rowan which was hit hard into the sacrifice tree and  in the nail they hang the knapsack. They also poured cheese milk on the roots. On the day of Jyri they also sacrificed sheep wools.

Granader says Jyrki has been houshold deity (Hus-Gud) to whom the house family and cattle were in care of. One peculiar custom on the day of Jyri was not to give any items away from the house. Once one house master bought a cow from another house and went to get the cow. But they didn't give the cow to him but said: "Not today, come back tomorrow. We have had this custom a long time here. If we now give you the cow our all other cows will die".

My the day of Jyri went ordinarily. It was a saturday befor Easter so it went with Easter things.

Nopea päivitys. Olen lähdössä Turkuun. Tänään oli Ahlmanin ammattiopiston maatalousalan perustutkinnon eläintenhoitajien pääsykoe. Meni hyvin!

Terve!

Paul Dowswell & Tony Allan: Tositarinoita kummituksista / Paul Dowswell & Tony Allan: True Ghost Stories

English below

Seuraavaksi alan lukemaan Adolf Ehrnrooth, Marja-Liisa Lehtonen: Kenraalin testamentti.

-Lilli-

----------------------------------------------

Entertaining and interesting book.

It was claimed in the book some places and houses were still existing (more or less) and even open for the audience. I would really want to go and see those myself. It's a shame most of the places were in America.

Those ghost stories surely are always exciting and odd. For some of them there has been made a large investigations but still they are mystery. I'm quite skeptic about these thing but I still believe there is supernatural/paranormal things. Every these kind of things should be investigated properly and if there just isn't proof that it's fraud, force of nature etc. it must be cause of something unknown. After all there is a lot of strange things in this world which even science can't explain outright although it can explain the most of the cases/phenomenon with an argument and research.

But I still believe in fairies, dragons, ghosts, vampires, werewolves, witches, goblins etc. even when nobody hasn't been able to proof these things exist. But we have so many new species in the world which we aren't been able to find yet so I don't think it would be totally impossible these things called supernatural creatures wouldn't exist somewhere. They are just well hidden. And I must admit it is quite easy to hide from humans in these busy days when we can't see longer than our noses. Children on the other hand are still seeing them :)

Next I'll start to read Adolf Ehrnrooth, Marja-Liisa Lehtonen: Kenraalin vuosisata (General's century).

Kiirastorstai / Maundy Thursday

English below

Kiirastorstai

Olen hyvin pettynyt.

Menemme Kurikkaan isännän vanhemmille viettämään pääsiäistä. Siellä varmaan on tarjolla mämmiäkin.

2-vuotiaan tytön lahjakin on pahasti kesken, 18-vuotiaan lahja on suunnittelu vaiheessa.

Toivotan teille kaikille aurinkoista ja lämmintä pääsiäistä (luin, että jonnekin povataan jo 20 asteen lämpöä! Ihanaa! Kesä tulee!), en usko, että kirjoittelen mitään tänne pääsiäisen aikana. Jyrin päivä / kodinhaltijan juhla olisi tuossa 23.4 joten kirjoitan siitä sitten seuraavalla viikolla kun pääsen taas paremmin koneen ääreen.

Maundy Thursday

The Thursday of the Easter week. On Maundy Thursday people banished "kiira" with fire, tar smokes, cows sculls and many other magic thing from the house yards so "the evil spirits would escape from the region". At Hankasalmi is told the master would walk around the mansion two times clockwise and one time counterclockwise with a burning tar branch after him. The other man walked behind him and hit the burning branch with alder branch and shouted all the time "Kits kiira metsään!" (Kits kiira to the forest!).

Especially at the Häme Maundy Thursday has been the best day for cleaning and not only cleaning the house but also cutting the hairs and nails. In some areas these times people took cover from the evil forces by burning bitter smoked fires gathered from the junipers and tar bins in the time of fullmoon.

I cleaned our apartment already on monday week after. My hair would need some cutting too but I thought I'll go to the barber on the beginning of the June.

We have had Easter here now all the week at our apartment. The grass has been growing wonderfully (even the one which I "poisoned" with Tolu washing agent), there's still one cake left of the paskha on the fridge, we've been eating a lot of chocolate eggs and other easter candy, I forgot to buy mämmi (rye pudding) but I think that thing will be arranged later on the week. I didn't see any conducters of finnish easter on Palm Sunday. I'm very dissapointed.

We are going to Kurikka to spend the Easter with my partner's parents. I think we might get mämmi from there. And we will see witches. At least one. My partner's god daughter is going to conduct a finnish easter again this year, I'm sure of it. There they go to conduct a finnish easter on the Saturday of the easter week.

I haven't made any cards and it's starting to worry me. But simply I just don't have interest to bring all the things on the tabel and after put them all away again. I must pull myself together later for a little bit on the May because theres two young girls (2 and 5 years old) and one 18 year old young woman who will be needing birthday cards. And for the 2 year old I also have present to make and for the 18 year old the present is in planning point.

I wish you all sunny and warm Easter (I read they forecast here even +20 degrees! Wonderful! Summer is coming!), I don't think I'll come back to write anything on Easter time. On the 23rd of April its Day of Jyri / the celebration of houshold deity but I will tell about it more on next week when I'm better near computer.

Virposunnuntai/ Conduct a Finnish Easter

English below

Virposunnuntai

Viikkoa ennen pääsiäistä. Lapset olivat liikkeillä varhain, kulkivat talosta taloon käsissään kirjavilla tilkuilla koristettuja tuoreita pajunvitsoja, virpoja. Talon emännän tavattuaan he virpoivat häntä kaikille suomalaisille tuttujen lorujen tahdissa: "Virvon varvon, tuoreeks terveeks, tulevaks vuodeks. Vitsa sulle, palkka mulle". Tapa on kuulunut jo varhaiskristilliseen aikaan, mistä todistaa virpoa-sanan palautuminen muinaisvenäjään. Länsi-Suomessa lapset ovat koonneet »palmuja» eli »pajunkissoja». Savossa on taiteltu lehdettömiä rauduskoivun oksia ja pantu vesiastiaan. Näistä oksista on ennustettu kevään saapumisen nopeutta.

Harmillista. Se kun on niin kiva perinne.

Tästä alkaa pääsiäisviikko. Kämppä on jo koristeltu ja rairuohokin on jo pitkää ja sinne on ilmestynyt tipuja :)

Conduct a Finnish Easter

Week before Easter. Children were early on the move, they went from house to house with fresh willow branches decorated with colourful patches on their hands (and nowdays they usually dress up like witches too). When they met the house mistress they conducted a Finnish Easter to her with the poems all known by the Finnish people: "Virvon varvon, tuoreeks terveeks, tulevaks vuodeks. Vitsa sulle, palkka mulle" ("Virvon varvon, to the fresh health, to the becoming year. Branch for you, gift for me" and then they would give the decorated branch for her and for gift they get nowdays mostly candy, it's like halloween :)). There is many different poems for this but every of them are in same form. The custom has belonged to the early Christians which proofs the recovery of the word "virpoa" to the ancient Russia. In the West of the Finland children gathered "palms" aka "catkins". At Savo they folded leafless silver birch branches and put them in the waterbowl. From these branches they predicted how fast the spring would come.

I've noticed they conduct a Finnish Easter on the Palm Sunday at the south of the Finland and at the Ostrobothnia they conduct a Finnish Easter on the Saturday before the Easter, Holy saturday. Whereas they don't really conduct a Finnish Easter at all at the Vakka-Suomi (pushel finland). And now days it seems the whole tradition is vanishing. I've been waiting the children on my door and I haven't seen anyone, not even on the streets. And I don't believe it would be the cause of the parliamentary elections which are now here in Finland. And I've seen only some small groups of children at the Ostrobothnia on last years. It's a really shame. It's so nice tradition.

This is the beginning of the Easter. I've already decorated our apartment and the easter grass is quite long already and there appears to be a few chicks now :)
